Virginia State Police released its report on local and statewide crime figures for 2021 and it showed a 7.1% rise in violent crime across the Commonwealth, including a 6.4% increase in homicides. The report defined violent crimes as murder, forcible sex offenses, robbery and aggravated assault. There were nearly 17,000 violent crime offenses reported in 2021 compared to 15,700 reported in 2020. Motor vehicle thefts were up close to 4% while drug arrests dropped by nearly half.
