The 2024 Virginia General Assembly session will convene at noon today at the State Capitol. Lawmakers will adjourn on Saturday, March 9. Among the items on this legislative term’s agenda that directly affects our area is a bill that calls for the study of the Atlantic menhaden fishery. It calls for the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences, Virginia Marine Resources Commission, and others to conduct a three-year study of the ecology, impact and economic importance of Atlantic menhaden. One other piece of legislation of local interest is Senate Joint Resolution 8, which celebrates the life of Ronald Lee Jett of Reedville, noting Jett’s accomplishments as a businessman, his public service in county government and as a member of the Northumberland County Volunteer Rescue Squad and the Fairfields Volunteer Fire Department, and devotion to his family and community.
