The Virginia Department of Transportation has announced plans to rehabilitate the North End Branch Bridge in Mathews County. VDOT says actual Construction is expected to begin sometime later this year, and when it wraps up, it will mean improved safety. The work will also extend the service life of the narrow bridge, which was built back in 1949. Plans call for widening the bridge deck and increasing the weight restriction. The $3.5 million project will mean big improvements for the 74-year-old bridge that is currently listed in poor condition. On average, more than 6,500 vehicles a day cross the bridge, according to VDOT.
