Va. communities get grants for learning centers

Across Virginia communities are getting money to help offer tutoring and other educational services to students and families.

The Virginia Department of Education has awarded 47 new grants ranging from $50,000 to $200,000. The money comes from the 21st-Century Community Learning Centers program. Fifty-two programs that received grants in 2012 and 2013 will continue to be funded.

Officials say the money will allow school divisions, faith-based organizations and community groups to provide tutoring, enrichment activities and other services.
