RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – The public corruption trial of former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, is entering its third week.
The McDonnells are charged in a 14-count indictment with accepting more than $165,000 in gifts and loans from the former CEO of a nutritional supplements company in exchange for promoting his products. They could face decades in prison if convicted.
So far, the jury has heard from 26 prosecution witnesses. Among them is Jonnie Williams, the former Star Scientific Inc. chief executive who provided the gifts and loans and was granted immunity by the government in exchange for his cooperation. He testified that he spent lavishly on the McDonnells solely to secure their help.
The trial resumes Monday with testimony from more government witnesses.
