The Bay School Community Arts Center is excited to participate in this year’s Mathews Market Days, Friday and Saturday, September 5 and 6. The Bay School will extend its open hours from 9:00am to 5:00pm both days to align with the festival. Local artists will host display booths both in and outside the Art Speaks gallery, with a variety of artwork including jewelry, pottery, painting, stained glass and smocking. These artists will be on hand throughout the weekend to talk about their art and even demonstrate some techniques. Children’s art activities will be offered for free under tents in the Bay School driveway. Children will have the opportunity to make a sand painting, decorate a mask, create a Celtic style bracelet, and design artist trading cards. There will be a table set up for Teen Open Studio, with various materials available for teen artists to create mini masterpieces on canvas and artist trading cards. There will also be photo opportunities for festival-goers to pose as The Mona Lisa, Charlie Brown, and other famous artistic characters.
If you are interested in volunteering to assist with the children’s art activities, please call Pam or Grace at the Bay School at 804-725-1278. The Bay School is located at 279 Main Street in Mathews, VA, on the beautiful Middle Peninsula of the Chesapeake Bay. The Bay School is a non-profit arts organization partially funded by the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as local community foundations. More than 100 studio classes are offered each year and twelve outreach programs bring art into the community to those who cannot attend a traditional art class.
