RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and his allies are spending heavily to defeat a little-known tea party challenger.

Cantor faces economic professor Dave Brat in Virginia’s June 10 Republican primary for the Seventh Congressional District, which stretches from Culpeper to the Richmond area.

Beltway-groups have chipped in to help Cantor defeat Brat.

Cantor is seen as the next in line to be U.S. House speaker. But he and his supporters have met stiff resistance in trying to wrest control of the Virginia Republican Party from tea party activists this year.

Also, voters in the First Congressional District in eastern Virginia will choose between incumbent Rep. Rob Wittman and Anthony Riedel, a spokesman for the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation.
