Tangier Island Gets State Grant For Fuel Storage

Tangier  Island has secured a $2.3 million grant from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to safeguard its vital fuel storage and distribution infrastructure. Tangier relies heavily on its fuel facility for essential supplies to support its fishing community of 375 residents. Mayor James Eskridge expressed gratitude, noting the grant will ensure continued access to fuel and heating oil, critical for island life. The funding will upgrade storage tanks, fuel lines, and enhance environmental protections against spills. Tangier plans to purchase the facility from its current owner, securing long-term sustainability amid environmental challenges.
