Sports Betting Pushback

State lawmakers have once again struck out with a proposal to allow betting on Virginia college sports teams. Since 2021, Virginia law has permitted sports betting through casinos and online platforms like FanDuel and BetMGM, except for wagers on state youth and college sports. Senate Bill 124, although gaining committee support, was deferred to 2025 by the Senate money committee. Notably, there’s no fiscal cost associated with the proposal. The legislation aims to curb illegal betting in Virginia while ensuring consistency. It could also boost tax revenue for the state and enhance safety for bettors. According to some observers, even the small additional games introduced by the bill could contribute to state coffers.
