Sentator Lucas: Arena Deal DOA. Youngkin: Not So Fast

Virginia Senator Louise Lucas says as far as she’s concerned, an Alexandria arena deal is dead. Senator Lucas, the chair of the Senate’s Finance and Appropriations Committee, says a bill that would establish a state authority for the proposed Alexandria basketball and hockey arena is not on the committee’s docket, despite the fact that it was championed by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin. Lucas says she believes it was a mistake not to involve the Democratic legislative leadership in discussions about the proposed arena before it was announced as close to a done deal in December. While Lucas doesn’t have the final word on the measure, her disapproval puts the arena’s backers at a very big disadvantage. Meanwhile, the governor says he is confident that at the end of the day, the General Assembly will come together because the project is good for the entire commonwealth.
