School Cellphone Ban Considered

A proposal in the Virginia Senate if made law, would allow school boards to ban cellphones during school hours. It comes as some of Virginia’s school boards have already begun banning or restricting the use of cellphones in schools. Now, the Virginia Senate is backing a proposal to explicitly empower local boards to institute such prohibitions on cellphones and other “handheld communication devices” during regular school hours. On Tuesday, the proposed legislation passed in the Senate by a vote of 36 to 3. Next up, it will need to be approved by the House of Delegates, and then it will need to be signed into law by Governor Glenn Youngkin to go into effect. According to data from the National Center For Education Statistics, 76.9% of schools nationwide already prohibit cellphone use during school hours.
