Reminder: New move over law in effect

The new Move over law went into effect in Virginia at the beginning of this month. So that means drivers are legally obligated to move over one lane for any vehicle at the side of the road or on a shoulder displaying its emergency or hazard lights. The law was first enacted 21 years ago, but only involved emergency vehicles, but now includes any vehicle displaying emergency or hazard lights. If you are not able to move over one lane, you are required to slow down and pass with caution. The law does apply only to highways that have at least four lanes, at least two of which are intended for traffic proceeding as the approaching vehicle. A first time violation could result in a traffic infraction.
