Recycling Success

Students and staff of the Northern Neck Montessori School celebrated their statewide victory in a national recycling contest recently.

By collecting and returning more than 5,000 cans, which translated into 171 pounds of raw aluminum, the Northern Neck Montessori School in Kilmarnock finished in first place in Virginia and claimed a $1,000 prize as part of the Great American Can Roundup School Chal-lenge, sponsored by the Can Manufacturers Institute, a trade association representing can makers and their suppliers. The contest involved more than 1,000 schools from all 50 states. Collectively, those schools recycled more than 3.3 million aluminum cans, which generated more than $47,000 in recycling proceeds.

The Northern Neck Montessori School, which includes pre-school through grade three, has students from Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex and Northumberland counties.
