The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles joined with Virginia State Police and local law enforcement agencies to participate in Operation Crash Reduction which runs through today. The awareness and enforcement campaign encourages drivers to buckle up, slow down and practice other safe driving behaviors. More than 8,000 people were killed in crashes on Virginia roadways over the last 10 years. Of those killed, almost half were not properly restrained with a seat belt, car seat or booster seat.
