Body found in Potomac River identified

Northumberland County law enforcement has identified the body of a woman recovered last week from the Potomac River at Greenwood Beach.

According to the Northern Neck News, Northumberland County Sheriff C.A. Wilkins, says the department received a report of a body floating in the river in the area of Greenwood Beach at about 5:40 on the afternoon of August 7th. Northumberland authorities arrived on scene at 5:57 p.m. and discovered the body of a Caucasian female. The officials say the body appeared to have been in the water for a short amount of time.

Wilkins told the paper, that they started doing queries and found that St. Mary’s County in Maryland had a report of a missing person. “They e-mailed us a photograph and we notified our medical examiner and she came to the scene,” Wilkins said, adding that the medical examiner “tentatively identified” the female as the missing person from Maryland.

The body was positively identified as 66 year old Melissa Taubman Scanlon, of Gaithersburg, Md., and not that of Claudine Gifford, of Burgess who has been missing since leaving the Tiki Bar Windmill Point in Lancaster on the evening of July 6.

Mrs. Gifford remains missing and the Lancaster Sheriff’s Department is continuing it’s investigation. Gifford is described as having wavy sandy blond to light brown hair, brown eyes, is 5’4” tall, and weighs about 112 lbs. She was last seen wearing a multi-colored tank top, blue jeans, and sandals.
