New Museum Planned

A new museum is in the works for Mathews County.

The county’s first museum which is planned to house a variety of historical artifacts, will be built in the space above the Mathews County Visitors Center in the historic Sibley’s General Store on Main Street.

Right now, the historical society uses Tompkins Cottage. The cottage is open and run by volunteers on the weekend, but for years now, requests have been made by visitors for an official Mathews County Museum.

Those behind the movement say they hope to open the first of February next year, and between now and then, they are looking for volunteers to make it a reality.

When finished, the museum will be a part of the Tidewater Virginia Historical Society museum trail.
