New Historical Marker Announced

Bethel Baptist Church recently commemorated Gloucester’s Bethel Rosenwald School with a new historical marker. The school was a beacon for the black community of Sassafras during the era of segregation. 103 year old Tagie Dedmon Cosby and 80 year old Pauline Lemon Paige… both former students, proudly revealed the sign alongside Cosby’s grandsons. Cosby, the oldest surviving student, and Paige, the youngest present, shared a poignant moment as they unveiled the marker. The tapestry covering the sign before the reveal was a meaningful touch, gifted to Dr. Dorothy Cooke, Cosby’s daughter, during her visit to Africa. You are invited to visit the old school site on Native American Trail to see this important marker of local history.
