Multi-Vehicle Crash Shuts Down Westbound Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

No deaths were reported, but a number of people were taken to area hospitals after a pile up involving 43 vehicles on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The crash Saturday shut down the westbound span for more than 6 hours… backing up traffic for miles on US Route 50. It began as a chain reaction crash involving 23 vehicles, followed by a series of secondary crashes just before 8am Saturday. Several of the injuries were said to be serious, but none of them were said to be life-threatening. The 2-lane eastbound span carried traffic in both directions while workers cleared the wreckage on the westbound span. That meant eastbound and westbound traffic alternated on the eastbound span. The cause of the crash is not yet clear but it is believed to have been due to the extremely foggy conditions at the time.
