Lots of ideas are on the table for the 2024 General Assembly Session here in Virginia… among them, possible expansion of the use of speed cameras around the commonwealth. When lawmakers convene this month, they will take a close look at a proposal that would allow local governments to install speed cameras wherever they deem them necessary. Violators could be subject to penalties of up to $100. Those behind the proposed legislation say it would increase speed enforcement and reduce the number of traffic fatalities. State law currently allows local governments to install speed cameras in work and school zones, but if passed, the new law would allow their placement in any location deemed necessary by local governments.
