Monument Questions In Mathews

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors will hold their final meeting of the year tomorrow at 6pm in the historic courthouse. Lots of items are on the agenda, but the transfer of ownership of the Confederate monument and the area on the courthouse green where it stands, is not expected to be on that list. It was last year when the board asked the Sons of Confederate Veterans and Daughters of the Confederacy for written proof of their ownership of the monument, but the could not provide any such paperwork. Supervisors take the position that the citizens of Mathews County are the owners of the land and of the monument, and they say they are not simply going to give it away. In fact, back in 2021 there was a referendum to keep the monument on the court green, and 80 percent voted in favor of it.
