The Mathews County NAACP is demanding that the County Board of Supervisors halt the proposed transfer of the Confederate monument at Courthouse Square and the property it sits on to a private entity. According to a news release the organization says actively supporting the ongoing display of Confederate flags or other memorabilia creates a hostile and unwelcoming environment for Black families in the county and interferes with the rights of residents. A public hearing on the transfer is set for September 21.
