Mathews County School Board Adopts Budget

By a 4-1 vote, the Mathews County School Board adopted the revised 2025 budget, which includes a 5 percent pay increase for teachers and staff, plus a step on the salary scale. This decision follows a meeting in early June where county supervisors approved $300,000 in additional funding for schools. Superintendent Dr. David S. Daniel highlighted challenges faced this year, including a $500,000 reduction in state funding due to declining enrollments and unexpected repair costs totaling $149,500. Despite these obstacles, the new budget, set at $16.48 million, reflects a 2.09 percent increase over FY24. School Board member Bobby Dobson was the only dissenting vote, expressing concerns over long-term financial stability.
