Mathews County Historical Society Receives Grant For Thomas James Store

The Mathews County Historical Society a $100,000 grant to elevate the Thomas James Store to be out of the reach of floodwaters and stormwater runoff. According to the Gazette-Journal the grant is from the Emergency Supplemental Historical Preservation Fund, which the National Park Service administers. The Thomas James Store was built prior to 1820 and experts say it is one of the oldest and best preserved early nineteenth century mercantile establishments in the South.
