Legislative Session Wraps Up

On Saturday, the Democratic-controlled Virginia General Assembly wrapped up its 60-day session. Lawmakers turned up their nose at Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s plans for a $2 billion sports arena, just a day after the governor signed legislation to ensure same-sex couples cannot be denied marriage licenses here in Virginia. Governor Youngkin did however, veto 8 of the other 84 bills that were sent to his desk for his signature. By votes of 62-37 in the House of Delegates and 24-14 in the Senate, lawmakers agreed on Saturday to a two-year spending plan that includes more money for schools, teachers, state employees and mental health. Democrats however, would not agree to the tax overhaul plan that had been proposed by Governor Youngkin.
