18-year-old Derek Poole, a senior at Gloucester High School, the starting center fielder on the Dukes baseball team and a starting guard on the basketball team, was arrested back in January on felony assault charges.
Poole was charged with malicious wounding and strangulation, both felonies. He is accused of assaulting a former teammate.
Poole was jailed, then released from the Gloucester County Jail on $10,000 bond. Among the conditions of his release from jail… he must refrain from the use of alcohol and illegal drugs, adhere to a 24-hour curfew, with the exception of travel to and from school or school-related functions, and maintain his education.
Following Poole’s arrest, school officials imposed sanctions on Poole, saying he was going to have to “earn back” his position on the basketball team, which he did. He also finished out the basketball sea-son before moving on to baseball.
Poole now has a trial scheduled for May 20.
