New water meters are being installed in Gloucester. It’s called Advanced Metering Infrastructure, and when the program wraps up sometime between now and 9 months or so from now, all customers will have a new state of the art water meter. When that happens, utilities employees who currently spend about 25 percent of their time each month reading meters, will be able to dedicate that time to making repairs on the infrastructure and improving customer service. The utilities will also be able to know in real time if there is a major leak in the water system and then be able to pinpoint exactly where the leak is.
