Fort Nonsense Ceremony

The grand opening ceremony for Fort Nonsense, Mathews County’s new historical park, will start at 10:00 A.M. this Saturday with J. Michael Moore, historian and curator at Lee Hall Mansion, as the keynote speaker.

During the all day event, visitors will be able to experience life as it was during the American Civil War. A wide variety of displays and demonstrations will be open to the public,music, dancing, living history displays, artillery and infantry demonstration.

Fort Nonsense represents one of the best preserved Confederate earthworks in the local area. Parking will be at Mathews High School with shuttle buses providing transport to the fort from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. Visitors are encouraged to arrive at the high school early in order to be at the opening ceremony by 10:00 a.m.

Special needs parking will be available at the fort.

Planning committee for this event consists of members from the Mathews County Historical Society, The Sons of Confederate Veterans, United Daughters of the Confederacy, The Mathews County Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee, and Mathews County.
