Essex Re-Zoning

The Essex County Airport Authority wants to re-zone some airport property outside Tappahannock from agriculture to light industry.

The change is being brought about after a business expressed interest in establishing a dry fertilizer blending facility on the 24 acre site.

As it is now, Southern States is the only business offering that type of service in Essex County. However, the retail showroom portion of Southern States closed last year.

Reportedly, no other businesses have shown interest in the site.

County officials, in response to questions about environmental concerns, said that the site will be scrutinized more closely than a regular rezoning given its location at the airport.

The Dept. of Environmental Quality will be involved in the process.
