A former resident of the Northern Neck who has since died, has now been identified as a suspect in two cold case murders that took place more than three decades ago. Investigators with the city of Hampton Division of Police, Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Chesapeake Field Office and FBI Norfolk Field Office held a news conference, naming the suspect as Alan Wade Wilmer Sr. who died on December 15, 2017 at the age of 63, at his home in Lancaster County. His body remained undiscovered for nearly a month after his death. Investigators say because Wilmer never was convicted of a crime, his name was never in the system, so he slipped through the cracks. Investigators, using forensic evidence, now say Wilmer was responsible for a September 1987 sexual assault and double homicide in Isle of Wight and a July 1989 sexual assault and homicide in Hampton. They also said that if he was alive today, he would be facing charges for both crimes.
