Cicadageddon Predicted

Virginia is preparing for a surge of periodical cicadas, known as “Cicada-geddon,” as Brood XIX (19) emerges from its 13-year slumber. Entomologists predict these cicadas will be seen and heard in at least 14 counties. Simultaneously, another brood, Brood XIII (13), is emerging in the Midwest. This dual emergence marks a rare event, not seen since 1803. The loud cicada chorus is expected to reach levels that may be compared to thousands of lawnmowers running simultaneously. Despite the noise, experts assure the public that the cicadas are harmless and provide a unique natural spectacle.
