Cell Phone Ban Deemed Successful

Mathews County’s Superintendent of Schools, Dr. David S. Daniel, recently reviewed the first year of a division-wide student cell phone ban at a special board meeting. Implemented in August 2023, the policy banned cell phones during the school day and on buses. Daniel reported positive feedback from teachers and noted increased student interactions during lunch as a side effect. Disciplinary data shows 159 violations at Mathews High School and 24 at Thomas Hunter Middle School. For the coming year, the policy will see uniform enforcement across the district.
