Building The Shipbuilding Workforce

Newport News Shipbuilding is ramping up its hiring efforts as the demand for nuclear-powered submarines surges. The shipyard aims to hire 3,000 skilled trades workers this year and a total of 19,000 within the decade to meet the growing demand. Last year, the Hampton Roads Workforce Council warned that maritime shipbuilding vacancies could reach 40,000 by 2030 without capacity-building measures. With Newport News Shipbuilding’s strategic partnerships and recruitment efforts, the region is taking steps to address this workforce gap and ensure its competitiveness in the shipbuilding industry.
