The Beryl R. Newman Memorial Bridge, otherwise known as the Urbanna Bridge, was damaged recently when a Lincoln Navigator slammed into it, knocking out six top guard rails.
No one was hurt in the single-car accident, but parts of the rails fell into Urbanna Creek.
The U.S. Coast Guard retrieved them from the water. The Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department, Central Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad, Middlesex deputies, State Police and VDOT personnel all responded. Repairs are being made to the bridge, but it’s strength and integrity were not compromised, according to officials.
