Big Changes On The Way For Virginia Prisons

According to an announcement from the Virginia Department of Corrections, four prisons run by the state will be shut down, and the state agency will take control of the Virginia’s only privately operated prison this summer. On Friday, it was revealed that Augusta Correctional Center, Sussex II State Prison, Haynesville Correctional Unit #17 and Stafford Community Corrections Alternative Program will close by next July 1st. Inmates housed currently in those facilities will be transferred to different Virginia Department of Corrections facilities throughout the commonwealth, based on security level and classification. Virginia will also end its contract with the company that currently operates the Lawrenceville Correctional Center in Brunswick County on August 1st.
