2 killed, 3 injured after boat capsizes in Va.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) – Two people are dead and three others are recovering from injuries after a boat capsized in the James River.

The accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. Sunday near a pier in Newport News.

Newport News assistant fire chief J. David Barrick says in a news release that several victims were holding on to ropes thrown by bystanders when firefighters arrived at the scene.

Barrick says two people died at the scene. Two others were taken to local hospitals and a third was treated at the scene.

Newport News police Sgt. Andy Shull tells media outlets that several police officers and firefighters jumped into the water to rescue the victims.

The victims haven’t been identified.

The accident remains under investigation.
