A pair of Gloucester County Sheriff’s deputies receive awards for their actions in saving the life of another law enforcement officer. The Gazette-Journal reports Lt. Matthew Saunders and Master Deputy Betty Sawyer were honored during a recent Board of Supervisors meeting. Mathews County Deputy Byron “Sarge” VanZile had just entered the Gloucester courthouse last month when he had a major cardiac event and Sawyer immediately rendered aid with Saunders running over from another part of the courthouse to help.
