Birdwalk at Swan Lake/Flag Pond on Monday

SWAN LAKE/FLAG POND BIRD WALK – On Monday, August 14, the Northern Neck Audubon Society (NNAS) will conduct a bird walk at 9:00 am at Swan Lake / Flag Pond near the mouth of the Potomac River in Northumberland County. The walk will begin at the home of NNAS members Edie and Sandy Dodge at 250 Flag Pond Drive, Heathsville, VA 22473. A wooded path leads past a tidal pond to a beach on the Potomac with beautiful views of the river and the Chesapeake Bay. Possible sightings on this walk are House and American Gold Finches, Carolina Wrens, Indigo Buntings, Red Bellied Wood Peckers, Brown Thrashers, Chipping Sparrows, Brown-headed Nuthatches, Blue Grosbeaks, Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Least Terns, Brown Pelicans, Mute Swans, Bald Eagles, Osprey, Least, Spotted and Semipalmated Sandpipers.

 

Note: Flag Pond Drive has a mailing address of Heathsville, but it is near Burgess and Ophelia. GPS directions can be confusing. Directions are as follows: From Kilmarnock, take Route 200 N (E. Church St) 12. 7 miles to the stop light at Route 360 in Burgess. Turn left on Rt. 360 West, go 1/8th mile and turn right on Rt. 644 (Hacks Neck Road). Follow 644 for 4.5 miles and turn left on Brammer Drive. Take the next left onto Swan Lake, then the next right onto Flag Pond Lane. From Warsaw, take Route 360 E approximately 26. 5 miles to Burgess. Turn left on Hacks Neck Road (Rt. 644) which is 1/8th mile before the stop light at 360 & Rt. 200. Follow 644 for 4.5 miles and turn left on Brammer Drive. Take the next left onto Swan Lake, then the next right onto Flag Pond Lane. Several pairs of loaner binoculars will be available.
