Swift water rescue team from Virginia arrives in Texas

CHANTILLY, Va. (AP) – More than a dozen members of an elite search and rescue team from Virginia have arrived in Virginia to assist with the response to Hurricane Harvey.

Chuck Ryan, an assistant chief with Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, said in a video Tuesday that 14 swift water rescue specialists arrived early Tuesday in Texas.

The rescuers are members of Fairfax County’s elite Urban Search And Rescue team, also known as Task Force 1, which is deployed around the world to respond to natural disasters.

Ryan said the team had been planning to go straight to Houston, but federal authorities instead routed them to San Antonio for staging until a decision could be made on where to send them.
