Shellfish ban lifted

The Virginia Department of Health Division of Shellfish Sanitation has rescinded an emergency shellfish closure on the Perrin River in Gloucester. State Health officials ordered the lifting of the closure effective Thursday, March 23rd, although a Virginia Department of Health Division of Shellfish Sanitation notice originally said the closure would be in place until today.

The ban went into effect after diesel fuel was spotted coming from a boat that sunk in the river in February. Booms were brought in to contain and clean up the diesel fuel spill, first by a regional hazmat team and then by a private contractor.
