The TSA said in a statement that the woman had a .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun loaded with five bullets in her purse at BWI Airport. One bullet was in the chamber.
TSA officers detected the gun Thursday morning as the woman entered the checkpoint and put her carry-on items on the x-ray conveyor belt. Authorities say she told officials that her son put the gun in her purse before her flight.
The Washington Post reports that Maryland Transportation Authority identified the woman as 57-year-old Vicki Tambellini of Kilmarnock, Virginia.
It was not known if Tambellini has a lawyer.
